You probably haven’t thought about using a VPN, but it’s a cheap piece of technology everyone should have. I’m going to quickly explain what a VPN is, and why you should spend the $30 per year to own one.
What is a VPN?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It’s a system that hides your identity and allows you to appear in any country around the world. It does this by using servers physically setup in another country (you choose which). The data between your computer and the server is encrypted. Thus anyone trying to trace you, only gets as far as the server, never you personally.
Why do I need a VPN?
Personal data security is a serious issue. Unfortunately, most people don’t think about it until it’s too late. By encrypting the data your computer sends and receives, you insulate yourself from that risk.
Security experts warn against using public Wi-Fi hotspots, such as in a coffee shop, airport or hotel lobby, due to the risk of your connection being hijacked or snooped upon. Internet service providers may invade your privacy by selling data about your online habits to advertisers. A VPN eliminates those risks. – TomsGuide
VPNs are also a gateway to accessing blocked content (like US Television shows), or safely downloading Torrents. Of course I would never advocate flaunting piracy laws simply because you can… but if you are part of the 327 million people pirating movies, music, etc, then you probably want to be using a VPN for protection.
Choosing the right VPN
There are many good VPNs, but there are also bad ones. When choosing your VPN, you want to know that they will value your privacy above all else, and be confident they won’t roll over if the authorities ask for their member database etc.
